Designing with TM-30

IES TM-30 has been available since 2015 and has been subjected to rigorous review experimentation. It is now an American National Standard (ANSI) document, and the underlying calculation framework is shared with CIE 224:2017. TM-30. It is now used to specify light source color rendition in the WELL Building Standard, the United State Department of Defense Unified Facilities Criteria for Medical Facilities, and the DLC Performance Standard v5.0. The one initial limitation to broader TM-30 adoption was that the IES has not provided any official recommendations on how the method should be used to specify color rendition. Such guidance is now provided in Annex E, which is the focus of this presentation.

This presentation will explain how specifiers can use ANSI/IES TM-30 Recommendation for Specifying Light Source Color Rendition and the color rendering specifications found in Annex E. Annex E provides specifiers with a system that is easy to understand and use, which helps make TM-30 the specifier's primary color rendering framework. The presentation will review the Design Intents of Preference, Vividness, and Fidelity at all three Priority Levels and will include a demonstration of light sources that fall into each category. The focus will be on selecting appropriate criteria for various applications and on TM-30 related deliverables at each phase of the design process. Live demonstration will be provided.
