The Effectiveness of Integrating Germicidal UV with Architectural Lighting in Real Spaces

Germicidal ultraviolet radiation (GUV) has been shown to be effective at controlling bacteria and viruses, including the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, in laboratory tests and analytical simulations. More recently, researchers have begun room scale experiments and verification of computer simulations to advance the design and adoption of GUV into standard building practice in efforts to curb airborne transmission of disease in enclosed spaces. Concurrently, manufacturers of architectural lighting systems have developed GUV devices that allow GUV installations to occur seamlessly in concert with or integrated into architectural luminaires.

This presentation explores the effectiveness of the application of germicidal ultraviolet radiation in a real space, particularly in treating aerosolized bacteria and viruses. It reports on an installation of four commercially available architecturally-integrated GUV systems installed in a classroom on the Parsons/New School campus. For each installation, measurements were conducted of the amount and spectrum of UV-C at multiple locations throughout the room, as well as measurements of the ability of the GUV generated by these installations to deactivate a surrogate for the coronavirus. The measured data are compared with analyses of the same space through computer simulation in order to determine the effectiveness of such simulations in predicting the efficacy of GUV installations.

Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of upper room GUV systems for disinfecting room air and their effectiveness in mitigating the transmission of airborne diseases in enclosed spaces. Attendees will also learn how lighting designers can integrate GUV technology into their designs and confidently predict results so as to deliver effective, safe, non-intrusive, and attractive solutions for creating healthy spaces.
